Stones from the riverbanks are also popular among homeowners because they are smooth and well rounded due to the constant water exposure for a long period of time. These river stones also come in different colors, such as blue, black, gray, red, and white. As a result, you have many choices and you can even combine some colors to a kaleidoscope effect or other unique appearances.

It is common for people to use stones for their water fixtures. Waterfalls and ponds will appear more natural and authentic when you include some stones around them. They also can stack some stones in a graduating height so water can start flowing from the topmost one. For this purpose, people tend to use stones from riverbanks because of their smooth texture and round appearance. They do not have sharp edges so they are safe even if you go bare feet.

You also can use stones for landscaping to create or decorate low walls. Small pebbles and stones bigger than your fist are both suitable to create these structures. You can integrate the small stones into the cement mixture, usually darker stones work best for this kind of wall structure. For bigger stones, you can put them one at a time into the wall using cement. In general, these stones for landscaping have darker colors than the solid limestone or slate.

Making paving is another purpose of using stones for landscaping. Flat river stones are perfect to be made as flagstones. Alternatively, you can opt for cement to form the flagstone. Flower boxes and raised garden beds can also be made of stones. Furthermore, stones look natural and they are durable which make them suitable for decorative and practical borders.

Nowadays, there are manmade stones available widely in the market. They really look like natural stones. They come in sections usually each is around one square foot or larger. Many people still prefer natural stones for landscaping, but you need to consider the impact of quarrying natural stones, especially in rivers, for our environment. Quarrying will alter the riverbed as well as the river itself which can potentially create problems like erosion or the destruction of natural habitat. All in all, using stones for landscaping will enhance the appearance of your garden and they also have a cooling effect.
